South Jersey Congregation Celebrates 190th Anniversary
Haddonfield United Methodist Church Celebrates the Planting of the Seeds of Current, Vital Congregation
Haddonfield, NJ — Haddonfield United Methodist Church, located at Warwick Road and Kings Highway, celebrates its 190th anniversary this November. In worship services throughout the month, the church will celebrate its proud history as well as the vibrancy of its current programs, while looking toward future growth. The community is invited to worship services at 5 PM on Saturdays and at 8, 9 and 10:30 AM on Sundays with live-streams available at 9 AM on Facebook and 10:30 AM through the web and church app. A celebration dinner will be held on Wednesday, November 20, 2019 at 5:30 PM, open to the public with advance reservations ($10 for adults and youth 13 and older; $5 for children ages 4-12).
From a meeting of a few dozen mostly farmers in a schoolhouse in 1829, Haddonfield United Methodist Church has grown into a vibrant congregation, which continues to play an important community role in South Jersey and beyond. “We are who we always were; a people gathered and then empowered and sent out into the world to live out our gifts,” reflects Senior Pastor Rev. Chris Heckert about the 190th anniversary of Methodism in Haddonfield.
In addition to four weekly worship services, the church offers an expansive music program, a Floral Arts Guild, Sunday School classes for all ages, and Connect Groups which meet to explore individual thoughts of the faith community. The church hosts Wednesday night dinners, holiday celebrations and concerts, a pre-school program, a Steeple Club for people available during the day, and Cub and Boy Scout troops, as well as various recovery and support groups.
Because of its size and history, retired Senior Pastor, Rev. Dr. Charles Sayre, called Haddonfield United Methodist a “big crane” among churches, supporting mission projects as varied as building homes in the Dominican Republic to serving meals and entertaining children at Give Kids the World in Florida. HUMC was also responsible in the 1970s for the creation of Respond, Inc. in Camden which has a history of providing child care services, job training, and housing.
Haddonfield United Methodist Church is an energetic regional church located in Haddonfield, NJ. The congregation is made up of 1,350 members and averages 438 in weekly attendance over four unique worship services, including traditional and contemporary worship styles. The church has a vibrant digital ministry that seeks to spiritually resource the congregation as well as connect people outside the walls with the church ministry through the church app, live-streaming, video ministries, and both paper and digital publications.
